Custom Minesweeper Boards: Build the Exact Field You Want to Train
Build your own field from 5 by 5 to 60 by 60, set the mine count, choose first-click safety, and use custom boards to drill a single weakness.
Quick answer
Every serious player hits the moment the stock boards stop teaching them anything. The beginner is too small, the expert is too bulky, and the exact cluster of [[1-2-1]] walls they keep missing is never where they need it. Custom boards fix all of it: your field, your size, your mine count, your rules, your weakness.

What you can set
- Columns and rows from 5 by 5 up to 60 by 60.
- Total mine count, clamped so the board stays fair (typically up to 85 percent of its cells).
- First-click safety on or off.
- Question marks in the flag cycle on or off.
Everything else comes along: personal best tracking per custom size, records, hints where permitted, and full stats. A custom board is a real board, not a sandbox, so your fastest clear on a given size becomes a number you can chase.
The gaps that only custom fields cover
The stock sizes are a ladder, not a gym. If you read confidently at Intermediate but choke on Expert's forty extra columns, an 18 by 18 board is the halfway sprint that trains the eye without the full furnace. If Beginner feels busier than it should, shrink it to 7 by 7 and drill the edge 1 until it is a reflex, then grow back up.
Best of all, custom boards let you design-for-your-missed-pattern. If the 1-2 is the one that always slips, build a wide thin board tall on walls, and fill it with flat numbers that produce the pattern on every row.
First-click safety is a training decision
Optimists keep first-click safety on so the opening never kills a run, ideal for building the habit of reading from a clean start. Purists turn it off so a surprising first click never mocks a real Expert starting board. Both are legitimate; the custom screen makes the choice yours instead of the game's.
Records respect the size
Because custom boards can be any shape, their personal bests are tracked per unique size, so a 10 by 10 and a 50 by 30 never compare unfairly. The scoreboards that matter here are the per-size ones; set a goal, beat it, and set a tighter field.
The honest caution
Custom boards are temptation to cheat difficulty: a 5 by 5 with one mine clears in seconds and inflates your stats, so competitive records and achievements stay carefully gated off the extreme ends. If your only achievement hunt is the honest kind, cap the mine count yourself and keep the field big enough to think about.
For a worked plan that makes use of those custom dimensions, the practice mode guide is the ten-board ladder to run on your freshly built field, and the speed techniques turn the drill into a time.
